Jacques Demy retrospective
La Cinémathèque Française in Paris is hosting until the 4th of August 2013 an exhibition about celebrated film director Jacques Demy. Demy was one of the major director of the French New Wave in the 50-60’s. His approach was very pop, musical, colourful, and fantaisy like, his major success “Les parapluies de Cherbourg, » Les Demoiselles de Rochefort », or « Peau d’Ane » were inspired by American golden-age musicals, many songs composed by Michel Legrand , have become hits over the years, immortalized by actresses such as Catherine Deneuve .
Unlike his contemporaries like Jean-Luc Godard ou Alain Resnais, Demy was uninterested in the experimental works or the political agitation of the days. Jacques Demy’s films do a new take on the Hollywood musical and the French melodrama, with a touch of the psychedelic and humour, even impertinence…
The exhibition combines excerpts from his films with photographs, paintings, drawings and sculptures created by the artist himself as well as by artists whose influence he proclaimed (Jean Cocteau, David Hockney, Alexander Calder, Raoul Dufy, Niki de Saint-Phalle).
A must-see for all cinema lovers!
